How to Start Retinol: An Esthetician's Guide for Beginners

Description

A licensed esthetician and RN walks through how to start retinol without wrecking your barrier. Frequency, purging vs. breakouts, what not to mix, and three professional picks we actually sell.

How to Start Retinol: An Esthetician's Guide for Beginners

If you have been circling retinol for months because you are afraid of peeling, that is the most common reason people wait. I am Lisa, co-founder of Cleanse Face & Body Bar, a licensed esthetician and RN. I still start almost every new retinoid user the same way: pea-size, nights only, two or three times a week.

This is retinol for beginners as we teach it in the treatment room. Slow enough for sensitive skin. Strong enough that you actually see a change.

TLDR

  • Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that speeds cell turnover and supports collagen. The American Academy of Dermatology groups retinol under the broader retinoid family.
  • How to start retinol: night only, pea-size, two to three nights a week, then add nights as your skin stays calm.
  • Dryness, mild flake, and a few spots in your usual breakout zones can be normal. Widespread sting, rash, or new spots on the cheeks and jaw often mean irritation, not a "purge."
  • Skip stacking acids, extra physical scrubs, and benzoyl peroxide on the same night until you are stable.
  • Our three picks: SkinBetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream, Face Reality Retinol Peptide Serum, and Face Reality Retinal B3 Serum.

What retinol actually is (and why we recommend it)

Retinoids are vitamin A ingredients used on skin. Prescription options include tretinoin. Over-the-counter retinol is milder because your skin has to convert it into the active form. AAD dermatologists note that retinoids help with mild acne, uneven tone, and fine lines because they speed surface cell turnover and support collagen.

That is why we keep recommending it. Not because it is trendy. Because it is one of the few actives that does several jobs at once: texture, leftover marks, clogged pores, and that dull, slow-turnover look that shows up in your 20s and 30s.

Retinal (retinaldehyde) sits a step closer to the active form than retinol, so it can feel more efficient. AlphaRet is SkinBetter's patented retinoid-plus-lactic pairing. If you want the chemistry side, we already compared that in AlphaRet vs. retinol. If you cannot use retinoids (pregnancy, nursing, or a very reactive barrier), start with our bakuchiol vs. retinol guide instead.

Do not use retinoids during pregnancy. The AAD is clear on that. If you are trying to conceive, pause and ask your OB.

How to start retinol

Night only. Retinoids make skin more sun-sensitive. The AAD advises night application plus shade, clothing, and sunscreen on all uncovered skin. We pair that with a mineral SPF most mornings, especially if your skin is already reactive.

Pea-size for the whole face. More product does not mean faster results. It usually means a tighter, flakier week.

Buffer if you are nervous. Cleanse, wait until skin is fully dry, moisturizer, then retinol, then another thin layer of moisturizer if you need it. Dry skin takes retinol more evenly than damp skin.

Frequency for retinol for beginners:

  1. Weeks 1-2: two nights a week (example: Sunday and Wednesday).
  2. Weeks 3-4: three nights if you have no sting, no tightness that lasts into the next day, and no angry redness.
  3. After that: every other night, then nightly if your skin stays comfortable.

Sensitive skin can stay at two or three nights indefinitely. That is still a real routine. You do not have to graduate to every night.

What to expect. Week one often feels like nothing. Weeks two to four can bring mild dryness or a few closed bumps in areas you already break out. Texture and tone usually look more even after several weeks of consistent use, not after three heroic nights.

Keep the rest of the routine boring: gentle cleanser, moisturizer, SPF. That is the whole support system.

Purging vs. breakouts

Purging is accelerated turnover pushing out clogs that were already forming. Breakouts from irritation are your barrier asking you to stop.

More likely purging

  • Spots show up where you already get congestion (chin, T-zone, along the jaw you know).
  • They look like small whiteheads or tiny closed bumps, not deep cysts on brand-new real estate.
  • They settle within a few weeks if you keep the same frequency (or drop back one night).

More likely irritation or a true breakout

  • Burning, itching, or a rash-like flush.
  • New spots on the cheeks, temples, or around the mouth if those areas were never your acne map.
  • Skin that looks raw, shiny, and tight, then peels in sheets.

If it is irritation, pause retinol. Repair with cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen only. Restart later at a lower frequency. Do not "push through" a compromised barrier.

What not to mix with retinol

On retinol nights, skip extra exfoliation. That means glycolic, lactic, or salicylic leave-ons, enzyme peels, and scrubs. Your retinoid is already increasing turnover.

Benzoyl peroxide and retinol in the same application can be irritating for a lot of people, and peroxide can also make some retinoids less stable. If you need both for acne, use benzoyl peroxide in the morning and retinol at night, or alternate nights. Do not sandwich them.

Vitamin C is usually a morning product. Keep retinol at night so you are not stacking two potential irritants.

Do not add a second retinoid. AlphaRet plus a retinol serum is not a beginner move.

Our top 3 retinol picks

These are the three we reach for most when someone asks for the best retinol products we actually stock.

1. SkinBetter AlphaRet Overnight Cream

AlphaRet Overnight Cream ($145) is the one I put on people who want visible smoothing and can invest in a cream they will finish. It pairs a retinoid with lactic acid in a moisturizing base, which is why many of us tolerate it better than a harsh drugstore gel. Use it as your night cream on retinol nights. Shop the rest of the line in our SkinBetter Science collection.

Best for: early lines, dullness, and anyone who wants one jar instead of serum plus cream.

2. Face Reality Retinol Peptide Serum

Retinol Peptide Serum ($60) is our workhorse for acne-prone skin that still wants retinoid benefits. It is a serum, so you follow with moisturizer. Face Reality formulas stay pore-conscious, which matters if you are already on mandelic or a simple FR routine.

Best for: congestion, texture, and a lower price to learn how to start retinol.

3. Face Reality Retinal B3 Serum

Retinal B3 Serum ($54) uses retinaldehyde with niacinamide. We often move people here after they tolerate the peptide serum, or when they want a step that works a little harder without jumping to a prescription. Note that this product may require an account login on our site.

Best for: experienced beginners who stayed calm on retinol and want the next rung.

Browse both brands in the Face Reality collection and SkinBetter collection linked above. Free shipping is $125 sitewide.

FAQ

Can I use retinol for sensitive skin? Yes, if you start at two nights a week, buffer with moisturizer, and stop if you sting. If your skin is already inflamed or you have rosacea, talk with a dermatologist first. The AAD flags redness and inflammation as a reason to pause and get a directed plan.

Do I apply retinol on damp skin? No. Wait until your face is dry. Damp skin can drive the product in too fast and increase irritation.

How long until I see results? Give it a month of consistent, comfortable use before you judge. Texture often shifts first. Lines take longer.

Can I wear retinol under makeup the next day? Yes, once any flake settles. Use a hydrating moisturizer and SPF. Do not apply a fresh layer of retinol in the morning.

What if I am pregnant? Skip retinoids. Use the bakuchiol guide linked above and clear the rest of your routine with your OB.

If you want a product matched to your skin instead of guessing, reply to this post or shop the three picks above. We would rather you start slower than quit in week two.
