The Best Pregnancy-Safe Skincare Products, According to an Esthetician & RN

TLDR: Most professional skincare brands are safer during pregnancy than you'd expect — the main ingredients to avoid are retinoids, hydroquinone, high-dose leave-on salicylic acid, and certain chemical sunscreen actives. Face Reality, Sorella Apothecary, Hydrinity, Eminence, and PCA Skin all have strong pregnancy-safe options. Below are the specific products we recommend most often to our pregnant and breastfeeding clients, organized by category.

Pregnancy changes everything about your skincare routine — or at least it feels that way. You're suddenly second-guessing every product you've used for years, and the internet gives you a different answer every time you search.

As a licensed esthetician and registered nurse, I've worked with hundreds of pregnant and postpartum clients navigating exactly this. The good news: the ingredient list you actually need to avoid is shorter than most articles make it sound. The bad news: figuring out which of your current products falls on which side of that line takes time you probably don't have.

This guide gives you the shortlist — what to avoid, what's fine, and the specific products we reach for most often at Cleanse for pregnant and breastfeeding clients.

Ingredients to Avoid During Pregnancy

Keep this list short and practical:

  • Retinoids (retinol, retinyl palmitate, tretinoin, adapalene) — the most important category to avoid. Studies in animals have shown links to birth defects at high doses; most OBs and dermatologists recommend avoiding all topical retinoids as a precaution.
  • Hydroquinone — used for dark spots and melasma, but has a higher absorption rate than most topicals and is typically avoided during pregnancy.
  • High-dose leave-on salicylic acid — in rinse-off formulas like cleansers, low concentrations are generally considered fine. Leave-on products at 2% or higher (toners, spot treatments) are typically avoided as a precaution. Mandelic acid is an excellent alternative.
  • Chemical sunscreen actives — particularly oxybenzone and avobenzone, which absorb into the bloodstream. Mineral SPF (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) is the safe swap.
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives — found in some older or lower-quality formulations; less common in professional skincare.

Everything in our pregnancy-safe collection has been reviewed against these concerns.

Is Face Reality Pregnancy Safe?

Yes — most Face Reality products are considered pregnancy safe, and they're among the most frequently recommended professional skincare products for pregnant clients by estheticians.

Face Reality's formulas are built around AHA acids (mandelic, lactic, glycolic), gentle cleansing agents, and barrier-supporting ingredients rather than retinoids or high-dose BHAs. Their most popular products for pregnant clients:

Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser — Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and gentle enough for daily use through all three trimesters. Our single most-recommended cleanser for pregnant clients, regardless of skin type.

Face Reality Mandelic Serum — Uses L-Mandelic Acid and L-Lactic Acid, both AHAs considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is the best pregnancy-safe option for treating acne, texture, and uneven tone without retinoids. Available in multiple strengths — most pregnant clients start at 5% or 8%.

Face Reality Barrier Balance Creamy Cleanser — A richer cleansing option for dry or combination skin that needs more moisture support during pregnancy, when skin can become reactive.

Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream — A peptide-based moisturizer with antioxidant support, fully acne-safe and pregnancy-safe. Good evening moisturizer option.

Face Reality HydraCalm Mask — A calming treatment mask for reactive, inflamed, or sensitized skin — common during the first trimester when hormones are shifting fastest.

The one exception: Face Reality Acne Med contains benzoyl peroxide, which is generally considered low-risk in small concentrations but worth a conversation with your OB before using during pregnancy. When in doubt, we steer pregnant clients toward the Mandelic Serum as their acne treatment instead.

Best Pregnancy-Safe Cleansers

The cleanser is the easiest swap — most gentle, fragrance-free cleansers are already pregnancy safe. What you're avoiding here is high-dose salicylic acid cleansers used as leave-on treatments, or anything with heavy fragrance that's causing irritation.

Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser — Our top pick for all skin types during pregnancy. Mild, non-stripping, completely fragrance-free.

Skin Script Green Tea Citrus Cleanser — Antioxidant-rich cleansing for normal to combination skin, with a light citrus scent from natural extracts rather than synthetic fragrance.

Sorella Apothecary Orange You Jelly Cleanser — A gel-jelly formula for oily or combination skin that cleanses thoroughly without stripping. Botanically based with no retinoids or high-dose BHAs.

Best Pregnancy-Safe Serums

This is where most clients get anxious — serums are where retinoids and high-dose actives tend to live. The good news is that hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, vitamin C, and AHAs like mandelic and lactic acid are all considered safe during pregnancy.

Face Reality Mandelic Serum — The best pregnancy-safe treatment serum we carry. Addresses acne, texture, and hyperpigmentation through gentle AHA exfoliation. Safe during breastfeeding as well.

Sorella Apothecary Pomegranate Acai Serum — Antioxidant serum for brightening and protection, formulated around botanical actives rather than synthetic retinoids.

Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Purifying Mist — Hypochlorous acid mist that's safe, fragrance-free, and excellent for reactive or inflamed pregnancy skin. Works as a toner, calming mist, or post-cleanse step.

Best Pregnancy-Safe Moisturizers

Pregnancy skin can swing in any direction — some clients get oilier, some get dramatically drier, some develop sensitivity they've never had before. A few solid options across those scenarios:

Sorella Apothecary Blueberry Milk Moisturizer — Rich, botanically based moisturizer for dry or dehydrated pregnancy skin. No retinoids, fragrance-free, deeply hydrating.

Face Reality Cran-Peptide Cream — Fully acne-safe peptide moisturizer that works for pregnancy skin that's both congestion-prone and drier than usual.

Sorella Apothecary Daily Greens Moisturizer — A lighter everyday option with botanical antioxidants, well-tolerated by most skin types during pregnancy.

Best Pregnancy-Safe SPF

This is the non-negotiable one — UV exposure is the biggest driver of melasma during pregnancy (the "mask of pregnancy"), and melasma is dramatically harder to treat than it is to prevent. The swap here is chemical → mineral.

Sorella Apothecary Tinted Dew Drops SPF 50 — A mineral SPF with a sheer tint, meaning it provides coverage without looking heavy. One of our most popular daily SPF options for pregnant clients who want protection and a light finish.

Face Reality Daily SPF 30 Plus — A clean, mineral-based SPF formulated to be fully acne-safe — good for oily or combination pregnancy skin that breaks out easily under heavier SPFs.

A Simple Pregnancy-Safe Routine

You don't need to overhaul everything. A basic morning and evening routine covers most concerns:

Morning: Gentle cleanser → hydrating serum or mist → moisturizer → mineral SPF

Evening: Gentle cleanser → Mandelic Serum 2–3x per week (or skip on off-nights) → peptide or hydrating moisturizer

For acne flares, replace the Mandelic Serum with Face Reality Sulfur Spot Treatment on active breakouts — sulfur is pregnancy-safe and effective for inflamed blemishes.

For melasma or hyperpigmentation, consistent SPF is the most important intervention. Vitamin C serums (ascorbic acid-based) are generally considered safe and can help with brightening alongside daily SPF.
