Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Safe Skincare, Curated by a Licensed Esthetician & RN
Finding skincare that's genuinely safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding is harder than it should be. As a licensed esthetician and registered nurse, I built this collection specifically for that reason — every product here has been reviewed for ingredients that are commonly flagged as unsafe during pregnancy, including retinoids, hydroquinone, high-dose salicylic acid, and chemical sunscreen actives like oxybenzone.
What you'll find instead: gentle AHA exfoliants, barrier-supporting moisturizers, mineral SPF, and pregnancy-safe serums from brands we trust and use in our treatment room every day — Face Reality, Eminence Organic Skin Care, Sorella Apothecary, Anfisa, Hydrinity, and PCA Skin.
Common concerns this collection addresses:
-
Hormonal acne and breakouts during pregnancy
-
Hyperpigmentation and melasma (the "mask of pregnancy")
-
Dry, sensitive, or reactive skin during the first trimester
-
Safe exfoliation without retinoids
-
Breastfeeding-safe routines after delivery
A note on Face Reality: Yes — most Face Reality products are pregnancy safe. Their Mandelic Serum, Ultra Gentle Cleanser, and Cran-Peptide Cream are among our most-recommended products for pregnant and nursing clients. The one exception is their Acne Med (benzoyl peroxide), which is generally considered safe in low concentrations but worth discussing with your OB.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Face Reality pregnancy safe? Most Face Reality products are considered pregnancy safe. Their formulas are built around gentle, non-retinoid actives that are widely used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Products like the Ultra Gentle Cleanser, Mandelic Serum, Cran-Peptide Cream, HydraCalm Mask, and Calming Facial Toner are among the most popular choices for our pregnant and nursing clients. The one product we advise checking with your OB first is the Acne Med (benzoyl peroxide) — it's generally considered low-risk in small concentrations, but individual guidance from your provider is always the safest approach.
Is Face Reality Mandelic Serum pregnancy safe? Yes. Face Reality Mandelic Serum uses L-Mandelic Acid and L-Lactic Acid — both alpha hydroxy acids considered safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. It's one of the best pregnancy-safe options for treating acne, uneven skin tone, and texture without relying on retinoids or high-dose salicylic acid.
What skincare ingredients should I avoid during pregnancy? The main ingredients to avoid are retinoids (retinol, tretinoin, retinyl palmitate), hydroquinone, high-dose salicylic acid (leave-on concentrations above 2%), formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and chemical sunscreen actives like oxybenzone and avobenzone. Everything in this collection has been reviewed against these concerns.
Is salicylic acid safe during pregnancy? In rinse-off formulas (like cleansers), low concentrations of salicylic acid are generally considered safe. Leave-on products with higher concentrations — like exfoliating toners or spot treatments at 2% or more — are typically avoided as a precaution. When in doubt, mandelic acid is an excellent alternative that provides similar exfoliation without the same concerns.
What is a good pregnancy safe face wash? We recommend the Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser for most skin types — it's fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and gentle enough for daily use during pregnancy. For oily or acne-prone skin, the Face Reality Barrier Balance Creamy Cleanser is another strong option. Both are free from retinoids, parabens, and harsh surfactants.
Can I use a serum while pregnant? Yes, with the right ingredients. Serums formulated with hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, peptides, vitamin C, and AHAs like mandelic or lactic acid are all considered safe options. What to avoid: retinol serums, high-concentration vitamin A derivatives, and anything containing hydroquinone. Several serums in this collection — including options from Hydrinity, Face Reality, and Sorella Apothecary — are regularly recommended for pregnant and breastfeeding clients by our esthetician team.
